Honestly, some of the impetus needs to shift from outsized returns to artistic merit, and sure, projects might have lower ROI, but at least something of value will be added to the world.

I had a good but sad chuckle at your comment. A lot of the art of mobile games went away with the rise of churn f2p. Not that they don't have great art, but that the focus is on monetization and formulaic approaches. This is why most of the innovation still comes from PC.

Honestly - there's so much creative opportunity in mobile for new control methods (GPS / accelerometer / more) since a phone has so many interfaces. It's too bad. But still, I'm self-funding my game project because I feel like it's still worth it to make art even if it's not the highest ROI for my money.
